"Air Race"

The P-80 and T-33 (the 2-seat trainer version depicted here) were the first operation jets flown by the United States. Even though it has a futuristic appearance, the P-80 was actually designed in 1943 by the great Kelly Johnson who would go on to design some truly iconic aircraft. I've always loved the jet, with its straight wings and tip tanks and prominent nose. It has a certain classic-yet-futuristic vibe to it that sets it apart from the "Century Series" fighter jets which came after it.
This scene depicts a low pass by a T-33. The red and white pylon is my homage to the classic air race posters of the 1930's- the "golden era" of air racing. This particular T-33 actually exists and is still flying, making occasional appearances at both the Reno Air Races, and at Chino Airport in California as part of the "Planes of Fame" Museum. I added the dramatic sky to give it some contrast and atmosphere. This is one of my favorite paintings Ive done so far. It was fun to create.
